The Portage Sunday League Soccer, now rebranded as the Westland Insurance Soccer League, is gearing up for another season of co-ed soccer, with registration opening this Saturday, April 5. Established seven to eight years ago, the league has grown into a beloved local event, welcoming players aged 15 and up for casual yet competitive play. Organizer Dave Oshust says they play every Sunday evening.

"We play from early June to mid-September, depending on the number of teams. It's all about fun, but we make sure the teams are balanced so everyone gets a fair game."

With a strong focus on inclusivity, the league accommodates all skill levels, with smaller nets and no goalkeepers, providing opportunities for players to score. Teams are made up of seven players, with substitutes available each week to fill in for absences.

"The great thing about this league is that you don't need a big soccer background. If you're looking for exercise and fun, this is the perfect opportunity. After each game, Mr. Mikes hosts us for drinks and meals, creating a real sense of community."

Last year, the league saw 63 players across nine teams, and while Oshust hopes for an even bigger turnout this year, he's grateful for the support from local businesses, which provide sponsorships.

This year, Westland Insurance has become the league's title sponsor, marking a significant milestone for the league.

"We've been lucky to have great sponsorships over the years, and Westland stepping up is huge for us. It helps keep costs down and makes everything run smoothly."

The league also maintains a relaxed approach to scheduling, avoiding play on long weekends to ensure players can enjoy family time during the summer months.

With a season full of fun, competition, and camaraderie on the horizon, the Westland Insurance Soccer League is set to bring together more members of the Portage community for another memorable season.

Registration opens this Saturday, and spots are expected to fill quickly.
