Parker Scherr has made Portage la Prairie his home for the past three years, and his journey is a testament to the power of community support and resilience. The 20-year-old hockey player, currently in his final year with the Portage Terriers, reflects on a career shaped not only by his athletic achievements but also by the kindness and generosity of the community that embraced him.

Kim Scherr, Parker's mother, recalls the uncertainty when Parker first moved from Olds, Alberta, to join the Terriers.

"Parker’s arrival in Portage was a bit unexpected. He was traded from the Olds Grizzlies, and Blake Spiller, the coach, invited him to come be a part of the team. He drove out here alone, never been to Manitoba before, and was welcomed by the team and community with open arms."

For Kim, the experience was both exciting and emotional.

"It's been incredible to see how the people of Portage have supported him, not just the players but also the fans, volunteers, and families. We've made many friends and truly feel like part of this community."

Parker's path to junior hockey wasn't always clear-cut. As a young child, he wasn't immediately drawn to the sport.

"When he was little, he would fight and scream about getting dressed for hockey," Kim recalls. "But as time went on, hockey became the center of our lives. It was clear that it was the one thing he loved, and his dedication paid off."

Now, Parker is a role model for many, including students in the Portage School Division. He's not only known for his on-ice skills but also for his character.

"I tell everyone that playing here has been a privilege. The opportunity to work and play hockey at the same time is unique, and I've built connections that will last a lifetime. The community has made my time here unforgettable."

One of the most important relationships in Parker's life has been with his billet family, Kyle and Alicia Pettinger. The Pettinger's welcomed Parker into their home and treated him like one of their own.

"They've been amazing," Kim said, with tears in her eyes. "Kyle and Alicia have made Parker feel like family, and we are so grateful for their support."

Parker echoed his mother, adding, "Living with Kyle and Alicia has been a life-changing experience. They're not just my billet family; they're my family. I've built strong connections with them and their extended family, and it's something I'll always cherish."

As Parker prepares for the next chapter in his life, he remains uncertain whether hockey will continue to be part of his future.

"I'm passionate about pursuing a career in law enforcement, but I could also see myself continuing with hockey. After this season, I'll take some time to figure it out."

Kim is confident that whatever Parker decides, his experiences in Portage have set him up for success.

"The Terriers organization has been incredible in supporting him, and the community's love and care will stay with him for life."

Both Kim and Parker are deeply grateful to the Portage Terriers organization, the fans, the Portage la Prairie School Division and community for providing such a unique and supportive environment this last few years. As Parker's time in Portage comes to a close, "after we win" he says, the Scherr's will leave with lasting memories and a deep connection to Portage la Prairie.
