Several public figures in Carstairs will be detained Saturday, with donations to the Mountain View Food Bank Society being the only way to secure their release.
Andrea Young, a community peace officer in the Town of Carstairs, discussed the Jail and Bail for Food event on Saturday from noon to 6 p.m. at the Carstairs Community Hall and its purpose.
"We try to do a food drive every year in support of the Mountain View Food Bank, which does support the Town of Carstairs and some surrounding areas as well, and we like to do it around the Easter time so that because donations aren't quite as high as they are when they're around Christmas time."
She explained that in the past, they have tried different methods of fundraising food, and this time, she will be "detaining" multiple members of the public.
"Their only way to get out of being detained is to get friends, family and supporters to come and bring food donations in turn for their bail once they reach a certain amount of food."
Each person detained (five residents) will have to fill a six-foot table with donations both on top and below. But if somebody's table is filled too fast, their bail might go up to help bring in more donations.
"The word has got out pretty good thanks to social media. The people that we have chosen to be detained, they've done a lot of work themselves just trying to rally up ahead of time. Some people have already started collecting for those that wouldn't be able to make it on Saturday."
She hopes to see strong community participation and generous donations.
