Estevan has been recognized as one of the "Most Neighbourly Towns in the Prairies" by the World Atlas blog. Estevan stands out as one of the friendliest, offering a place where visitors and locals alike are greeted with open arms.
“I think the title is really accurate in describing Estevan. We kind of emit this ‘all are welcome’ feeling, and tourists get swept up in it when they visit,” said Jacquelyn Massey-Rounds, marketing and communications director for the City of Estevan.
“We take great pride when people make the trip to visit us here in the southeast corner,” she added.
Estevan offers a variety of activities, including nature, sports, and arts and culture.
Massey-Rounds highlighted some of the community’s top attractions, such as Lignite Louie and the Souris Valley Museum, where visitors can learn about Estevan’s history. The Estevan Art Gallery also features rotating exhibits.
“We’d like to remind both visitors and community members that they can rent canoes, kayaks, and paddleboards from Woodlawn Regional Park, which we think is the best way to experience the Souris River,” she said.
The city is also working on upgrading services to attract more visitors, such as replacing Hillside Pool and completing the downtown revitalization project.
“While we’re aiming to support regional visitors, we’re also preparing for more Canadian tourism, which we’ve seen in recent years. So increasing our support of local assets and ensuring they’re in the spotlight for greater success is definitely a focus for the upcoming season,” Massey-Rounds added.
Mayor Tony Sernick shared several proud moments, highlighting positive developments in the community, including new nursing homes, an MRI, the first SMR site, and the rebuilding of the coal fleet. He expressed pride in the upbeat attitude in Estevan, noting the energy surrounding local fundraisers and events.
“It’s nice to be surprised once in a while,” Sernick concluded, expressing his gratitude for the recognition of Estevan’s neighbourly spirit.
Regarding hidden gems, he mentioned the outdoors, particularly Boundary Dam for fishing, swimming, and kayaking, as well as the local golf course.
“We’re surrounded by everything. I mean, you can just name everything, and we have it right.”
He highlighted several events that unite the community, such as the Strippers spring hockey tournament, curling bonspiel, trap shoot, various sports competitions, the Rotary Lobster Fest, graduation, and the fair. Emphasizing how these occasions foster neighbourly bonds and strengthen community ties.
“It's good to hear and good to get recognized once in a while for being nice,” Sernick said of the recognition.
