The Government of Saskatchewan will be winding down the Grade 12 provincial examination program at the end of August 2025 as work continues to develop a provincewide student assessment program.

"The history on this is provincial examinations were being administered by the Ministry of Education for Grade 12 students who were instructed by non-accredited teachers for home-based students and for adults wishing to earn 30 level credits in subjects for which departmental examinations were prepared," explained Education Minister Everett Hindley.

He said this decision aligns with feedback he has received directly from school board trustees, teachers, and families all across this province.

"Saskatchewan, I think, was the last province to still be doing this and this was something that, as a matter of fact, I know the previous Minister of Education was being lobbied on."

"I remember being at the Saskatchewan School Boards Association, the SSBA Conference in Regina, in December, and I had school board trustees chairs and directors coming to me saying, 'you know, we need to move forward on this. We need to discontinue these provincial exams. We're the last province in Canada doing this. We just don't need to be doing this anymore."

In the 2023-24 school year, only 25 percent of students needed to complete a provincial exam. Adults and home-based learners will be able to enroll in Grade 12 courses through the Saskatchewan Distance Learning Centre or applicable post-secondary institutions to earn Grade 12 credits.

Hindley said beginning in the 2025-26 school year, all grade 12 course marks will be determined by the teacher.
