Thomas Young, a security guard with Ten-8 Security on duty at The Station, 360 Railway St. W., contacted the RCMP and locked down the town facility after receiving a tip that a man may have been carrying a firearm in downtown Cochrane.

Young has provided Cochrane Now an account of how it all unfolded

Young knew the man and said an incident the previous week at The Station led him to believe the tip was credible.

"I called the RCMP and they had five or six cruisers here circling around within 10 minutes of the call," said Young.

Young said he never saw a weapon but wasn’t willing to take a chance.

"I just took the information, and knowing the suspect and his behaviour, I took it upon myself to notify the RCMP. I also told the staff here at The Station and locked it down."

"The RCMP came back to The Station and notified me that they did catch him and that he did have a weapon."

Young also contacted the Cochrane Public Library—an area included in his security coverage—provided a description of the suspect, and advised staff to call 911 immediately if they saw him.
