Scotland defeated Sweden 8-7 in the qualification round and will advance to face Canada in the semifinal on Saturday afternoon at the BKT World Men's Curling Championship at the Temple Gardens Curling Club.

The semifinal will be taking place this afternoon at 3 p.m.

This also means there will be a new champion, as reigning world champion Niklas Edin of Sweden has been eliminated.

Sweden opened with the hammer. Scotland's skip Bruce Mouat drew behind a guard to avoid a blank end, forcing Edin to draw for one.

Scotland replied in the second end with the hammer, scoring two points to take the lead.

A missed takeout by Mouat in the third end left Edin an open draw for two with his last rock to take a 3-2 lead.

With his first rock of the fourth end, with the hammer, Mouat drew behind a corner guard. Edin tried following him in but ticked off his own rock at the top of the 12-foot and was close to being shot rock. Mouat drew for at least one with his last rock. They measured for the second shot rock and confirmed two points for Scotland.

Sweden had the opportunity to blank in the fifth end. However, Edin made the open hit but couldn't roll out and ended up taking his single point to make it 4-4 at the fifth-end break.

Facing Sweden laying two, possibly three, Mouat had an open hit and rolled over to bump the second-shot rock to score two.

With his final rock in the seventh end, Edin drew to the button to score one but still trailed Scotland 6-5.

In a fairly open eighth end, Edin buried his last rock behind a centre-line guard. Mouat ran back his own guard but couldn't stick it and only scored one.

Sweden was laying two in the ninth end with Mouat's final rock. He ran his own rock back onto the shot stone but rolled too far. Edin made the draw for two to tie it 7-7 heading into the final end, with Scotland holding last rock.

On skip rocks, Scotland had shot rock with Sweden as second shot. Edin decided to throw up a guard with his first rock. Mouat made a hit and roll off the Swedish rock in the rings to lay two and block off the button. Edin moved both Scottish rocks to get shot rock. Mouat just needed to make the Swedish rock disappear, and he did, winning 8-7 and advancing to face Canada.

Norway vs. China

In the other qualification game, China came away with an 8-7 extra-end victory over Norway.

China opened with the hammer and scored one before stealing another point in the second end.

A double takeout by Norwegian skip Magnus Ramsfjell led to a blank end in the third.

In the fourth end, Ramsfjell attempted a run-back double but stuck the Chinese rock in the four-foot for a steal of one and a 3-0 lead for China.

After Chinese skip Xiaoming Xu came up short on a draw with his final stone, Ramsfjell rubbed off a Chinese stone in the four-foot but was still able to score two to get back into the game, trailing 3-2.

With his final rock in the sixth, Ramsfjell made a perfect freeze to a Chinese rock at the back of the button. Xu made a double raise tap-back for three and a 6-2 lead.

Ramsfjell had an open hit and scored three in the seventh to stay within striking distance, 6-5.

Xu had a double takeout for a possible four. However, he jammed it and scored only one.

In the ninth, Ramsfjell had a draw for two to tie the game but came up just heavy, as China led 7-6 with the hammer coming home.

In the 10th, Norway had the button completely blocked off. With Xu's first, he ran back a guard to open things up. However, Norway stole one to tie it 7-7 and send it to an extra end.

Laying two with his first skip rock, Ramsfjell threw up a guard to protect shot rock. Xu, with his first rock, made a tap-back on the shot rock, but Norway was still laying one. Ramsfjell went behind the centre guard with his last rock, meaning Xu needed to draw a piece of the button for the win. His weight was perfect, and he picked up the 8-7 victory.

China advances to face Switzerland in the other semifinal.
