The Family Resource Centre (FRC) in Portage la Prairie is rolling out several exciting updates for the community this spring. Executive Director Melissa Morrison shared details on new initiatives and upcoming events.
A highlight at the FRC is the introduction of a new van, affectionately named 'Pearl'. The centre recently upgraded its transportation from a 15-passenger van to an 8-passenger model.
"We just felt like the 15-passenger van wasn't as useful as it could be," Morrison explained. "The new 8-passenger van gives us more flexibility and options. It's going to help us pick up families for programs without relying on shuttle services or needing a special driver's license."
The new van aims to address transportation barriers for families, with the added benefit of being free of charge for those in need of a ride.
"We hope that it makes easier for families to get to our programs on time."
In addition to the new van, the centre is hosting an Easter Family Fun Day on April 12, from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. This event is perfect for young families with children ages 1-6, featuring activities like crafts and live bunnies.
"It's a great opportunity to experience the center and have fun with Easter activities."
Looking ahead to summer, the FRC is gearing up for its Summer Camp program. With seven different weeks of camp available, registration opens on April 22. Each week costs $100, and meals and snacks are included.
"We want families to send their kids for the day without worrying about anything other than having fun."
There are also opportunities for teenagers to apply for summer camp counselor positions, with postings available through local job listings.
Morrison also teased the upcoming Mom Prom, a fun event for all mothers, grandmothers, and anyone who wants to join in on the fun, taking place on April 26. The event promises an unforgettable night with VIP experiences, including champagne, hair styling, and a photo booth.
"It’s a perfect opportunity for moms to have a night out with their friends, and a great Mother's Day gift."
With so much going on, the FRC remains a key piece in the community for families, offering everything from transportation solutions to family fun and summer camp opportunities.
