Coun. Dawn Luhning rose on a point of privilege during public acknowledgements at last night’s city council meeting to praise the BKT World Men’s Curling Championship organizing committee for pulling off an outstanding event.
Luhning had to make a point of privilege as it related to another member of council. Coun. Heather Eby was one of the vice-chairs of the organizing committee.
Luhning said those who put together the event should be very proud of what they accomplished.
“What a great job everyone did, and we are very proud of everyone involved last week. The event attracted almost 78,000 people to Temple Gardens Centre. Feel free to do the math on that number, on an average price per meal per day, and determine how much of an economic boost that was for the City of Moose Jaw,” she commented.
According to Luhning, the committee consisted of four vice-chairs, 20 directors, and 340 volunteers who welcomed thousands of curling fans to the city.
She said it cannot be overstated how important it was for Moose Jaw to host a world championship like that.
“This type of event for a community is the pinnacle of events. Busy streets, busy retail shops, busy restaurants, and an overwhelming pride comes over you as a citizen, as a city councillor, and as the mayor, as you see so many people spending money in our city,” Luhning commented.
She asked the residents to take the time to recognize those who made the BKT World Men’s Curling Championship a success and congratulated everyone involved. She’s sure there will be more curling events hosted in Moose Jaw in the future.
