Entoying activities Involved in 'Minds in Motion'
Categories

The Alzheimer’s Society of Manitoba’s Central Plains Office is launching its spring Minds in Motion session on Wednesday, April 16, at Portage la Prairie’s Herman Prior Activity Centre. Regional Coordinator Pam Anderson describes the eight-week program as a blend of “fitness, fun, and friendship” for individuals with early to moderate dementia and their care partners.

Gentle exercise meets community bonding

Participants engage in chair-based exercises led by an instructor during the first hour, followed by social time over snacks and games like indoor golf or board activities. The $65 fee covers both the individual and their companion, with registration open through the Herman Prior Centre.

Anderson emphasizes the program’s focus on joy over diagnosis.

“We don’t focus on the dementia piece. We focus on just having fun—it’s a really great time for people to get out and socialize, be physically active, and keep their minds sharp.”

Breaking isolation with laughter

Local participants have praised the program’s ability to foster connection. Anderson shares that sessions often end with “lots of laughter, smiles, appreciations, and thank-yous,” with attendees expressing sadness when the eight weeks conclude. Care partners particularly value the respite, calling it a rare chance to “relax and laugh” without worrying about planning activities.

“People look forward to it. They actually get sad when the 8 weeks are up and want to know when the next one starts,” she says.

Registration remains flexible

No deadline applies, and walk-ins are welcome on April 16. Anderson, a psychiatric nurse with 30 years’ experience in senior mental health, joined the Alzheimer’s Society in November. She calls the role “incredibly fulfilling,” particularly in guiding families through dementia’s uncertainties.

“When you meet one person with dementia, you meet one person with dementia. Every situation is different, but we’re here to support them all.”
