Pam Anderson, Regional Coordinator for the Alzheimer’s Society of Manitoba’s Central Plains Office, has been in her role since this past November.

She explains that she's a psychiatric nurse with over 30 years of experience in Southern Health-Santé Sud’s Seniors Mental Health program.

From frontline care to community advocacy

Anderson’s connection to the Alzheimer’s Society began during the COVID-19 pandemic, when she assisted the Winnipeg office remotely by fielding support calls. Her latest position marks a return to the organization, now focusing on community outreach in her hometown of Portage la Prairie. “This role lets me help people close to my community and my heart,” she says.

A lifetime of dementia care experience

The veteran healthcare professional emphasizes the varied nature of dementia care in her work.

“When you meet one person with dementia, you meet one person with dementia,” Anderson notes, referencing the Alzheimer’s Society’s person-centered approach.

Her background includes helping families understand diagnoses, access resources, and develop coping strategies through uncertain journeys.

Building awareness in Central Plains

Anderson now leads local initiatives like the Minds in Motion social program and organizes Portage la Prairie’s annual Walk for Alzheimer’s. She remains available for community presentations about dementia signs, support systems, and care strategies.

“Many people don’t realize what resources exist until they need them,” she adds. “My job is to change that.”

Those seeking dementia-related support can contact Anderson at the Herman Prior Activity Centre (204) 239-4898 during her Monday-Wednesday office hours.
