Chinook’s Edge School Division will be launching flexible learning opportunities for families.
"Starting in September 2025, families who are not currently registered in Chinook’s Edge will be able to enroll their children in the flexible learning program, supported by Chinook’s Edge teachers," stated Chinook's Edge.
The program is designed for Grades 1 to 8 students and offers families a choice between two learning pathways.
The school division shared that one pathway involves receiving a backpack of resources each month containing learning resources with access to curricular projects. The other pathway offers a more rigorous program focused on academic achievement.
“Chinook’s Edge recognizes that some families are looking for flexibility in how learning is delivered,” says Karyn Barber, Associate Superintendent of System Services. “Chinook’s Edge looks forward to connecting with these families to provide high-quality learning that fits students’ needs and family context.”
The program offers students direct access to Chinook's Edge teachers, ensuring high-quality instruction. Students can join field trips and utilize community services, including fitness facilities.
“We are excited about partnering with families on this new journey,” says Barber. “We believe that adding this opportunity, and continuing to offer high quality education in our schools will ensure we are meeting the educational needs of families in our communities.”

The school division has 12 schools in neighbouring communities, including Olds, Mountain View County, Didsbury and Carstairs. Chinook's Edge has a total of 11,000 students across 40 Central Alberta schools.
In his last year of teaching, Wassmer received a Prime Minister’s Award of Teaching Excellence, the Chinook’s Edge Roy E. Cope Award for a significant contribution to the educational welfare of students, and the I. Keith Mann / NAC Orchestra Outstanding Band Director Award.
