In a news release provided by the Alberta government plans are to move cancer care and organ tissue donation and transplantation services out of Alberta Health Services (AHS) and under the purview of Acute Care Alberta.
The move is not happening until later this year but is expected to create specialized focus for cancer care and organ and tissue donation transplantation and will ensure the best care in these key areas that are important for a high-functioning health care system.
Dr. Chris Eagle, interim president and CEO of Acute Care Alberta is quoted saying, “I’m pleased to see these next steps moving forward to support efforts to refocus the health care system to better meet the needs of Albertans. Acute Care Alberta will ensure improved and dedicated access to the best health care possible.”
Acute Care Alberta will oversee cancer care services in Alberta by enabling Cancer Care Alberta to focus solely on providing timely treatment and services for those with cancer.
Acute Care Alberta will also have policy and oversight for organ and tissue donation and transplantation that will streamline the current processes, allowing for planning, program development and future vision for the critical life-saving services.
There are currently three out of four provincial health agencies now operational, Primary Care Alberta, Acute Care Alberta and Recovery Alberta.
Proposed changes to completing the work to refocus the health care system are expected to be brought in spring with legislation, and Asssited Living Alberta will be operational later this year.
