Construction has officially begun on the Okotoks Pickleball & Tennis Centre.

A groundbreaking ceremony was held to mark the occasion on Tuesday, April 8.

Among those in attendance were members of Okotoks Town Council, including Mayor Tanya Thorn, and members of the centre's board.

"Today's groundbreaking marks the beginning of phase one, an indoor facility that will include 12 pickleball courts and one tennis court. This centre will become a vibrant hub of year-round activity, welcoming athletes and recreation enthusiasts of all ages and skill levels. Hopefully, I'll even get to play," said Mayor Thorn at the ceremony.

The project is set to include 12 outdoor courts as well, which will be installed as part of phase two.

According to the centre's president, Ryan Sawatzky, phase one of the project has seen $5.6 million raised through donations and grants from the Town of Okotoks and the Government of Alberta.

That includes a recent million-dollar grant through the Province's Community Facility Enhancement Program.

More information on the Okotoks Pickleball and Tennis Centre can be seen on the project's website.
