Mound Wildlife Association has been intimately involved in fish stocking efforts in the Pilot Mound area over the years, and is gearing up for another season of those efforts. Their focus area is pretty broad, having landed from the Deloraine and Kenton regions to Lake Stephenfield.

"The fishing in a lot of the lakes we've been stocking is probably the best it's ever been," explained President Dustin Flanagan during Ripple Effect, presented by the Red River Basin Commission. "We're catching a lot of young walleye in Pelican Lake, for instance. The fishing there has been great. The Healthy Lake Committee has done a fabulous job with their aeration system, and making it very healthy. It hasn't winter killed in years. It's just a way healthier lake than it's ever been before, so hats off to the Healthy Lake Committee for that."

Flanagan noted last year wasn't the best for the Association's stocking projects, with only about 400 fish taken out of the group's walleye rearing pond, with the peak year being up to 17,000.

"Mother Nature was not nice to us last year," he noted. "We're going to a few bigger companies give us a hand this year to maybe see why we're not getting the numbers we did that one year and see if we can replicate that. The stocking efforts are going on as planned. We'll partner up with Fisheries, probably stock Rock Lake, and then the Healthy Lake Committee usually helps with Pelican Lake. There's a bunch of groups that do help stock the lakes just to make Fisheries job easier, so they can keep rolling, because they've got all those fry in the back of their truck. The quicker they can get them out, the healthier those fish are going to be."

Association organizing first "Rascal Shoot"

Flanagan also mentioned Mound Wildlife Association would be hosting its first "Rascal Shoot" May 3rd.

"We've always focused largely on fishing, so it was brought up that maybe we should aim into the hunting area," he said. "I teach Hunter Safety and junior rifle here in Killarney, so we decided to have a youth Rascal Shoot. It's basically just a fun day. get kids shooting .22s, teaching them the proper ways to shoot safely."
