As warmer temperatures settle into Portage la Prairie, the city is gearing up for its annual spring cleanup, an essential initiative aimed at revitalizing public spaces after the winter months. Paul Ziesmann, the Superintendent of Public Works, recently about what residents can expect as cleanup efforts begin.

With the arrival of consistently milder weather, Ziesmann shared that the city's cleanup operations are set to kick off next week.

"It's really driven by our staff, and we also partner with some community groups, specifically along the avenue, to help with tasks like cleaning up planters. But the bulk of it starts next week, and we're bringing in seasonal staff to help."

Ziesmann emphasized the importance of staffing in the city's efforts, with new seasonal workers starting Monday and another group joining at the end of the month. This increase in personnel will allow the team to focus on key tasks like street sweeping, garbage collection, and ditch maintenance.

"We also look at pavement conditions and improvements. These are some of the main areas we'll focus on in the coming weeks."

In addition to beautification projects, residents can expect upcoming community initiatives like the Spring Yard Waste Collection Program, where The City of Portage la Prairie will provide curb-side collection of yard waste from Monday, April 28th, to Monday, May 26th, included on your regular collection day.

For more info on that, you can contact the city operations department at (204) 239-8346

For those wondering about potential delays, Ziesmann assured that any disruptions to traffic or daily routines would be minimal.

"There may be very short delays when it comes to street sweeping or sidewalk debris removal, but these will be brief, and we'll keep the community informed through social media and signage."

As the season unfolds, Ziesmann urged residents to be patient as the cleanup gets underway, especially with the return of seasonal workers.

"It takes a little time to kick these programs off, but as it rolls out, I think people will be happy with the results."

For further updates, residents are encouraged to follow the city's social media channels and web pages.
