Cochrane’s own Kyla Lightfoot has been crowned Miss Ponoka Stampede 2025, marking her third rodeo queen title and a major milestone in her journey through Alberta’s rodeo royalty ranks.
Lightfoot, who previously held the titles of Miss Cochrane Lions Rodeo Queen and Miss Airdrie Pro Rodeo Queen, was officially selected during Ponoka Stampede's one-day competition on April 7. The selection process included horsemanship challenges, impromptu questions, a personal interview, and a formal dinner with judges and board members.
“This was always the end goal for me,” said Lightfoot. “Ponoka is one of the largest and most respected stampedes in Canada, and I really align with how they stay true to their heritage while continuing to push the sport of rodeo forward.”
Now representing one of Canada’s premier rodeos, Lightfoot is preparing for a whirlwind year of travel and public appearances. Her duties as Miss Ponoka Stampede will take her across Alberta, into Saskatchewan, and possibly into the U.S., promoting rodeo and engaging with communities.
“I’ll be incredibly busy,” she said. “There will be community events, hospital and school visits, and of course, I’ll be there all week when the Ponoka Stampede runs from June 25 to July 1.”
Lightfoot will officially take over her reign during Ponoka’s tarp Auction on May 2, where she’ll receive a custom saddle and buckle. This latest saddle will join others she earned during past rodeo titles, which she plans to display in a trophy collection.

Looking ahead, Lightfoot is already preparing to represent Ponoka on an even bigger stage. She’s set to compete for the Miss Rodeo Canada crown this fall, a goal she’s long held.
“To run for Miss Rodeo Canada, you need a pro title, and now I have that. I’m throwing my hat in the ring,” she said. “If successful, I’ll represent Canadian rodeo on a national and even international level.”
Balancing her rodeo commitments with her education, Lightfoot recently completed her second year at MacEwan University. She plans to take a one-year leave of absence to focus on her duties as Miss Ponoka Stampede and her pursuit of the Miss Rodeo Canada title.
With her favourite color, red, as the official colour of the Ponoka Stampede, Lightfoot says this opportunity already feels like a perfect fit.
“It’s meant to be,” she laughed. “I’m just overjoyed. I can’t wait for what this year will bring.”
