Starting on April 28th and running until May 4th, The Blackfalds Food Bank will be getting a much-needed boost with the help of Tim Hortons’ Smile Cookie Week.

Karie Ackermann, who does community operations for the food bank talks about their society.

“The Blackfalds Food Bank operates different programs, and one of the programs that we offer is called the lunch box program. That’s a specific program for families with children to help them with some of the costs. As we all know, in Alberta, the costs of food are increasing all the time. This program helps feed children, have lunches for school breakfast before they go to school, and then dinner, things that they can also apply to at home. It's a well needed community program and we have about 300 kids a week accessing that program.”

Ackermann says she is surprised by the high number of lunches needed.

“You know that is a number that we've seen increase. When COVID hit us and we were doing support for schools when they shut down, we thought it was just going to be a little program that we did assisting families during the pandemic. But after the pandemic, our numbers grew. That's telling us a lot about our economy, what families are going through and just the state of affairs that are are happening in our province.”

One way to help out the Blackfalds Food Bank is to show your support during Smile Cookie Week. Ackermann says they are happy to be the chosen charity for this.

“For our second year, we've been selected by the Blackfalds Tim Hortons. All of the proceeds from cookie sales will be donated to the Blackfalds Food Bank. We will have a number of volunteers on hand that week, hand decorating those smile cookies and transforming them from chocolate chip cookies to the smile cookie.”
