A quick response by the RM of Morse Fire Department on Tuesday to a grass fire ensured the inferno left the town untouched.
The fire call came into the volunteer department around 3:45 p.m. as a blaze just west of the community in grassland was spotted.
Trevor Moss, the RM of Morse's fire chief, said the fire was started by a train passing through the area on the tracks.
"We're not sure which train started it," he said. "A lot of different ignition sources, so it kind of spread out.
"When we arrived, it was actually moving quicker than expected with the high winds."
Moss estimates the fire scorched about 30 acres, with the easternmost point only half a mile from reaching Morse's town limit.
"We tackled it from two different directions, and we also had three RM graders out there, too," he said. "They're one of our best resources for stuff like that, the RM graders."
The firefighters were about to complete the fire call when they noticed the job wasn't complete.
"One of our members was going to fill with water, there was ties on the traincar actually burning," he said. "We ended up having to get CPKC to unload so we could soak all of them done."
Moss said CPKC was great to deal with during the incident, and he was thankful for the work of his crew as they finished up around 11 p.m.
