The Weyburn Police Service is advising the community, particularly local businesses, of circulating counterfeit bills. However, Deputy Police Chief Shane St. John says the counterfeit currency isn’t hard to spot.
“There's missing an A on Canada, the bill is made of paper, not the plastic, it actually says on it, ‘not legal tender, for motion picture use only, film production,’ it actually has warnings on the bill in small print, so just really take a hard look at it if you're getting those bills, that's $50 to $100."
He suspects it was purchased off of an online store like Temu or Wish.
St. John urges business owners to be wary of counterfeit money, and advises businesses on what they should look out for.
“They're going in trying to pay with big, 50s and 100s, that's not typically normal nowadays either. Most people use debit and credit, and there's not a lot of cash, so even having big bills, I'd be taking a look at them if you're receiving them as a business.”
He stresses the importance of reporting any instances of someone attempting to use fake bills.
“Please report it, any video that you have of the person that's using them, just that that's all key to any of this.”
The matter is currently under investigation.
