You’re seven years old. Mum’s in hospital. Dad says she’s ‘done something stupid’. She finds it hard to be happy. You start a list of everything brilliant about the world. Everything worth living for. 1. Ice Cream. 2. Roller Coasters. 3. Peeing in the lake and nobody knows… You leave it on her pillow. You know she's read it because she's corrected your spelling.
Twenty years and thousands of things later, the list takes on a life of its own.
The Humboldt and Area Arts Council presents Every Brilliant Thing, a hit comedy that revolves around depression. The dynamic one-person show, written by Danny Macmillan with Johnny Donahoe tours 19 communities in Saskatchewan this spring, arriving at the Humboldt & District Gallery on Thursday, April 17 at 7:30pm.
The astonishingly funny show draws on themes of depression, gratitude, and the lengths we go to for those we love. It’s a deep dive into emotional well-being through wit, wisdom and hilarity.
The performance features Saskatoon actress Elizabeth Nepjuk, who has been a staple at Dancing Sky Theatre performances for the past few years. Produced by Saskatoon-based Burnt Thicket Theatre, previous productions of Every Brilliant Thing have sold out extended runs in 2018 and 2020 at Saskatoon’s Live Five Theatre and Winterruption Festival, at Regina’s Globe Theatre, Calgary’s Fire Exit Theatre, and Langley’s Bez Arts Hub in 2023.
The performance is presented by the Organization of Saskatchewan Arts Councils (OSAC) and sponsored by the Humboldt Chapter of the Saskatchewan Association Social Workers and Friends of the Museum & Gallery.
The performance comes with audience advisories due to content and discussions about severe depression. It is recommended for ages 14+. More details are available from the Museum.
