An accident involving an impaired driver last Tuesday was reported to the Weyburn Police Service by a witness of the incident. An impaired man crashed into a fence, taking out a street sign in the process.

Deputy Police Chief Shane St. John says that when police arrived on scene, the man was found behind the wheel of the vehicle, intoxicated, and still using the intoxicant.

“We went in, we responded to the scene, and the driver was still using the intoxicant on scene, he was taken into custody and charged accordingly. Luckily, nobody got hurt - very, very, very lucky, no one got hurt in this incident.”

He explains making the arrest and laying charges was made easier by the drivers' actions.

“When they're in the process of still using the substance as we pull up, it makes it rather easy.”

After being arrested and charged, the man was released for a future court date.

As for the damage to the sign and fence, St. John says the damages will be included in the impaired driving charge.

“There could be restitution, we'll get an estimate of the damage done, and that'll go with the impaired as well.”

This matter is one of 70 calls for service responded to by the Weyburn Police Service between April 1 and April 7.
