Southwest residents, families, and local book lovers can head to Gull Lake for a family-friendly celebration of Canadian Independent Small Bookstore Day.

Yellow Canary Books & Stationary will host the event on Saturday, April 26, with longer store hours, kid's activities, a raffle, delicious popcorn balls, and more.

Hannah Girodat, owner of Yellow Canary Books & Stationary, shared that early release copies of David A. Robertson's latest book will be available on Independent Small Bookstore Day, a book that isn't set to be released until May.

"Canadian Independent Small Bookstore Day is a national day where all the Indie bookstores get together to promote not just buying books and reading, but Canadian publishers and authours," said Girodat. "It's important to celebrate for many reasons; encouraging reading is still super important for youth.

"It's also important in today's economy that we're supporting local and supporting small businesses."

The store will feature a full local authors section with a plethora of exciting books from southwest writers.

Folks who stop by can enter the raffle without a purchase, while anyone who does make a purchase can spin an exclusive prize wheel for an extra gift.

"The Canadian Independent Bookstore Association is also going to be running a very large contest where the grand prize winner can win $1,000 to our bookstore," she said. "If you buy a book, it's one entry, if you buy five books, it's five entries.

"You just have to enter online, and there are five prize winners."

Last year was Yellow Canary's first time putting on an event for Independent Small Bookstore Day, and Girodat is hopeful that this year will be equally as successful.

"We're encouraging everyone to come in, say hi to us, come see the bookstore, and celebrate Independent Bookstore Day with us," the Gull Lake business owner added.

Yellow Canary will be open from 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Independent Small Bookstore Day. No registration is required, and everyone is welcome.
