Tuesday's Western Manitoba Science Fair held at Brandon University was a resounding success once again with over 400 students from across the greater Westman Region sharing their projects that focus on Science, Technology and Math.

Event coordinator, Charlotte McConnell says the entire ran smoothly with top contenders from grades 1-12 sharing their knowledge of their chosen projects.

"All the kids had a great time, and we had a lot of new to science fair students this year," shares McConnell. "During our open ceremonies I had everyone who was new to the fair to put their hand up and it was over half of the crowd, which is unusual for us!  So, a lot of new people there and everyone really enjoyed the judging and all of the activities that we had."

McConnell says many of the projects focused on environmental issues, health and wellness, and agriculture.

Judging is done by local professionals in that sector or industry and this is done in categories by grade levels; Grades 1-2, 3-4, 5-6 etc.

"After all the discussion, they award the awards medals," she explains. "We give 15% of the age levels Bronze Medals, 15% Silver Medals, and 10% receive a Gold Medal. And that's across the board."
