The Swift Current Creek Watershed Stewards have set a closing date for the organizations.
Due to changes in fund availability and circumstance the Watershed Stewards will be shuttering operations on March 31, 2026.
Kevin Steinley, executive director of the Swift Current Creek Watershed Stewards, expects that there may be groups that pick up the gap left by the Watershed Stewards programming.
"We're hoping to find somebody to carry on with our educational programming, invasive weed programming and our other programming," said Steinely. "There are other organizations that, over the last number of years, have stepped in and they're doing the same work that we've been doing."
By shutting things down next year, the board of directors for the Watershed Stewards is hoping to preserve some of the monetary assets.
"Instead of bleeding off money, we'll be able to use what we have in reserve to fund ways to work with organizations to continue on with the work that we've been doing," said Steinley.
One of the biggest projects that is being affected by this is the monitoring of endangered aquatic species near the West end of the the Swift Current Watershed. This project is a collaborative effort with the Saskatchewan Association of Watersheds and also has some overview of a project that is tackling invasive aquatic species.
Steinley himself is a part-time employee as the executive director. While he does have other contracts and obligations, he is regretful that his time with the organization is coming to a close, as he has been there for ten years.
"If something came around in the next year or so if we found funding or a benefactor, I think the decision (to close) could be reversed," said Steinley.
Steinley noted that the Watershed Stewards have achieved many goals, and resolved many of the issues that they began the group to tackle.
