Spring cleaning is upon the city of Moose Jaw, which means a lot of waste needs to be disposed of in the proper manner. From yard waste to household garbage, here is what you need to know moving forward.

May long weekend (May 17 - 19) will be the time to dispose of yard waste for free at the Moose Jaw Landfill (1802 Caribou St. East).

Restrictions will be the same as previous years. All loads must be tarped as per bylaw 5156. Organic waste such as leaves, grass clippings, and pruned branches less than one inch in diameter will be accepted. When brought in, these items need to be bunched together or in transparent garbage bags.

"Then when we inspect, we can see through the orange, blue, or clear bag," said Staci Dobrescu, Manager of Public Works & Utilities.

However, if you are bringing in household waste during this time will still result in the $14 fee. Also, with the landfill capacity becoming scarcer, the city is encouraging residents to recycle and compost.

"You can purchase compost bins and start composting within your own property, which is very helpful. They are highly discounted. So, we encourage residents to do that as our goal is for the beginning of May that you'd be able to purchase one," stated Dobrescu.

Compost bins at can be purchased at City Hall and then picked up at the City Complex, which is located at 1010 High Street W.

As for garbage pickup changes, it will be switching from bi-weekly to weekly as of June 1. If you need more details of waste management, visit the City of Moose Jaw website
