Alberta’s top doctor is urging residents to ensure their measles immunizations are up to date as the province faces a growing number of confirmed cases.

As of April 11, there have been 58 confirmed cases of measles in Alberta, with the majority concentrated in the south and central health zones.

“Measles outbreaks are occurring in Canada, including Alberta,” said Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. Mark Joffe in a statement. “While the number of cases is concerning, I want to let Albertans know that public health officials are managing the cases and contacts as well as working with local leadership to support affected communities.”

Dr. Joffe noted that 48 of the confirmed cases are believed to be past the period when they could transmit the virus to others. However, he warned that the risk of transmission remains, especially from undiagnosed cases or individuals traveling from regions where measles is circulating.

“Measles is more serious than other common childhood illnesses. It can cause pneumonia, brain swelling and even death,” he said. “If you are showing symptoms of measles, stay home and call 811 for further direction.”

Early symptoms include fever, cough, runny nose, red eyes, and a blotchy red rash that typically appears three to seven days after the fever begins.

Dr. Joffe emphasized the importance of vaccination in preventing further spread: “Immunization with measles-containing vaccine is the single most important public health intervention to prevent measles. This is especially true for parents of children aged two and younger, who are more susceptible to severe outcomes.”

He said the measles vaccine is “safe and highly effective” and encouraged all eligible Albertans to check their immunization status. In Calgary and Edmonton, residents can call 811 to book an appointment, while those in other areas should contact their local health centre.

“It’s important that Albertans do their part to prevent the spread of measles,” Dr. Joffe said.
