The Innovation Plex hockey rink was a whole lot more colourful than usual last Tuesday evening.

Over 190 members of the community came out to paint the ice surface during "Skate and Paint', hosted by the City of Swift Current and sponsored by Service Master. The first half of the event was a free open skate, while the second half was a free invitation for families and individuals to come out and paint the ice in any way they pleased.

Helping organize this event was Krista Caswell, community recreation coordinator for the City of Swift Current, who was thrilled with the results considering this was the first time they hosted this event and on fairly short notice.

"It was a very good turnout considering we only kind of give the community two days warning that we were going to do it," said Caswell. "Our partners, the Swift Current Broncos, were really happy with it and it was a good send-off for their season."

Many of the illustrations put to the icy canvas were thank-you messages for the Broncos. Some were drawings for the sake of drawings, and others held various meanings and messages.

"It's something fun and different to do lots of other communities have started to do it as well, and it turns out it didn't take much to clean it up afterwards," said Caswell. "So it was a nice little fun event for everyone to do."

The City does plan to bring the Skate and paint event back next year, hopefully after the Broncos have an even longer playoff run.
