Alberta Health Services (AHS) has issued a public health alert following confirmation of a measles case involving an individual who visited multiple public locations in Canmore, Banff, and Calgary while infectious, potentially exposing others to the highly contagious virus.
AHS is urging anyone who was at the following locations during the specified times to review their immunization status and monitor for symptoms:
-

April 6, 2025, from approximately 5 a.m. to 3 p.m. -
Calgary – Delmar College of Hair and Esthetics

April 11, 2025, from 6:30 p.m. to 11 p.m.
People born in or after 1970 who have received fewer than two doses of a measles-containing vaccine are at risk of infection. AHS recommends those individuals check their vaccination records and be vigilant for symptoms.
Measles Symptoms
Measles symptoms typically begin with a fever of 38.3°C or higher, followed by a cough, runny nose and/or red eyes. A rash usually develops three to seven days after the onset of fever, starting behind the ears and spreading to the face, body, arms and legs. The rash may appear red and blotchy on lighter skin tones, or darker/purple on darker skin, and in some cases, it may be hard to see.
Anyone experiencing these symptoms is advised to stay home and call Health Link at 811 before visiting any healthcare provider, to prevent further spread.
Vaccine Guidance
The measles vaccine is highly effective and provided free of charge through Alberta’s publicly funded immunization program. Children typically receive their first dose at 12 months and a second dose at 18 months.
People who are unvaccinated or under-vaccinated—and who are pregnant, under one year of age, immunocompromised, or adults—are at greater risk of serious complications. They should contact Health Link at 811 immediately if exposed, as they may qualify for post-exposure treatment such as a vaccine or immune globulin.
Albertans can access their immunization records or obtain vaccine-related information by texting “vaccine record” or “measles” to 88111, calling 811, or contacting their local public health office. Routine vaccinations can be scheduled through public health clinics.
