The City of Estevan is getting ready for yet another Operation Clean Sweep this spring, with city crews targeting the end of May for that action.
Their full plan is laid out on the City of Estevan's website, with the start of the work on May 20th.
On the first day of work, crews will be cleaning the North, South, East, and West entrances to the city, along with any outlying areas.
The next day, May 21st, will see those crews move into the city and work on cleaning out city-owned properties and green spaces, such as boulevards, medians, parks, and natural areas.
The back half of the week changes what'll be done, as the work shifts from city crews to local residents with a city initiative to pick up organic material from people's residences. Work will be split into two phases - May 22nd will see the north part of the city worked on, while the south will see pickups on May 23rd.
To have the organic waste picked up, the city reminds people that branches must be bundled into groups under three feet, while loose items such as leaves, twigs, and other organic refuse must be bagged. Any items looking to be picked up by the city must be placed at the end of your driveway before 8 a.m.
The operation ends with the city's free landfill weekend on Saturday and Sunday, open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. While the landfill is open, the City reminds people of some of the rules around the weekend:
- Commercial properties are not included in the free landfill weekend.
- You must be a resident of Estevan, and proof of Estevan residency is required. (Driver's license, other documents with an Estevan address.)
- Free items that may be dropped off include furniture, grass trimmings, tree branches, and regular household garbage, including most appliances. (refrigerators, freezers, air conditioners, and mattresses/box springs are excluded)
- All hazardous waste materials will not be accepted, and waste from rural customers will not be accepted for free.
Estevan Mayor Tony Sernick says he's looking forward to the operation.
"We can get everybody's yards cleaned up and beautify the city. That's one thing this city took initiative of a few years back, even before my time on Council, I remember hearing about it on the campaign trails as well back then. It's making our city more beautiful, and I do believe everybody's been doing a good job. There's always more work to do, though."
