The Estevan Legion marked Vimy Ridge Day with a special event to honour the sacrifices made by soldiers in the Battle of Vimy Ridge and recognize the contributions of local volunteers.

Each year, the Legion hosts a presentation for local cadets to educate them about the historic battle. Captain Craig Bird, who also runs the Southeast Military Museum, has led the event for several years, explaining: “We do a presentation for the cadets about Vimy Ridge, covering the battle and what soldiers experienced, including the harsh weather and trench life.” This year’s focus was on the challenges soldiers faced during the battle, with an interactive floor map used to engage the cadets. “The giant map makes the experience more hands-on and allows the kids to really visualize what happened,” Bird said.

The ceremony culminated in a wreath-laying at the Estevan cenotaph, where attendees reflected on the sacrifices of local soldiers. Bird emphasized the importance of remembering veterans: “We need to honour their memory, especially as the number of World War II veterans dwindles.”

Following the presentation, the Legion held its annual awards ceremony, recognizing members for their years of service. Bird noted: “It’s a nice way to bring people together and appreciate the volunteers who keep the Legion running.” Awards were given for service milestones, from five to 55 years of dedication to the organization. Volunteers were also celebrated for their ongoing contributions to the community.

As Bird put it, “We need to pass on the lessons of sacrifice to the next generation.”
