The first Southeast Advocates job fair was a resounding success, connecting job seekers with a wide range of local employers — from healthcare and trades to government and retail — all actively recruiting for positions across the region.
“It was exciting to see those connections happening in real time,” said Ohjay Javier with Southeast Advocates. “We’re really happy with how it turned out, and we want to extend a big thank you to all the employers and community organizations who made this event possible.”
Among those recruiting were the Saskatchewan Health Authority, which is seeking paramedics amid a staffing shortage. The SHA offers several training options, including a two-week emergency medical responder course and a one-year primary care paramedic course.
St. Joseph's Hospital, Redhead Equipment and Southern Plains Co-op also took part in the fair.
Southeast College promoted programs aimed at building skills in healthcare, trades and computer science — including first aid, heavy equipment operation and a new power engineering course starting in September.
“Southeast College is a big help for job seekers, providing certificates or diplomas that can lead to employment across the region,” said Javier.
Westmoreland Mining was recruiting heavy-duty mechanics with Red Seal certification and a strong safety mindset. Apex Distribution was hiring for warehouse and repair shop roles, while Lowenberg Projects sought labourers and project managers for year-round construction work.
The City of Estevan promoted several opportunities, including summer student jobs. Additional openings will be posted online as they become available.
With employers actively hiring and the need for skilled workers growing, Southeast Advocates hopes to make the job fair an annual event.
“Next year, we'd love to bring in more employers and create more opportunities for everyone,” Javier said.
Those who missed the event are encouraged to visit the Southeast Advocates office for support.
“If anyone wasn’t able to attend but is still looking for employment, they’re very welcome to drop by our office and we’ll help them out,” said Javier.
