Pharmacists are able to perform assessments and recommend over the counter allergy medication based on patient needs, as well as prescribe stronger antihistamines when needed.

Many people experience seasonal allergy symptoms due to different allergens present in the air in the spring. This according to Pharmacist at the Weyburn Pharmasave, Dee Nelson, who explains where these allergens come from.

“In the springtime particularly, we have a lot of those triggers or allergens kind of floating around like certain molds from the snow melting, pollens from new plants budding and blooming. It's important to understand though that even though this tends to be the worst, allergy symptoms can present at any time of year."

Many people experiencing seasonal allergies may seek over the counter symptom relief. Nelson recommends consulting a pharmacist for an assessment, as they can assist in finding the right solution based on the present symptoms.

“We can do a full assessment. Even if we do pick a product off the shelf, we'll be able to decide which is best for you. Because there can be some interactions with some of the over-the-counter antihistamines. Some of them have a decongestant or a sinus product in there that we wouldn't necessarily want you using long term either. So, if you discuss with your pharmacist and explain specifically what your symptoms are, then we can help choose the best product for you.”

The ability to provide minor ailment assessments means people no longer have to speak to a doctor for allergy symptom relief, they can simply walk in to a local pharmacy.

Nelson continues noting they treat seasonal allergies specifically based on the symptoms experienced.

“We can kind of take an overall approach and use an oral antihistamine, you know, like Claritin, Reactine, Aerius. That would be your best bet if you're experiencing multiple symptoms. And but we can treat specifically based on what you're experiencing. So for someone that has strictly itchy, watery eyes, we have certain eye drops that we can use to treat those symptoms. If we have someone who's experiencing runny nose and congestion, then we would usually go with a nasal spray.”

“It is important to know too that not only the eye drops and their nasal sprays, but also stronger antihistamines can be prescribed through an assessment with the pharmacist.”

There are also options to prevent symptoms from appearing. If someone experiences seasonal allergies around the same time every year, they can begin to use an antihistamine preventatively.

“You can actually start taking an oral antihistamine preventatively at, let's say, the beginning of April every year and take it continuously throughout the spring or even into the summer. And that can not only treat your symptoms, but even if you start taking it soon enough, it can prevent those allergy symptoms from happening in the first place.”

Nelson concludes noting the treatability of allergies when people have the treatment they need.

“I hope everybody can find relief from their allergy symptoms because I know that it is not fun to deal with and it definitely can be treated.”
