Sunshine, wind, rain and even the possibility of flurries. The forecast is a bit of a mixed bag as we head into the Easter weekend, what does it mean for your travel plans?

Here’s a quick look at what is coming up:

  • Thursday night: A low of -5°, 30 per cent chance of rain or flurries

  • Friday: A mix of sun and cloud, warming to a high of 7°

  • Saturday: Sunny and 5° above normal with a high of 17

  • Sunday to Tuesday morning: 5 to 10 mm of rain possible, mild daytime temperatures with the potential for icy conditions overnight

Steven Berg is an Environment and Climate Change Meteorologist, and he says that while we could see some precipitation, it will be scattered.

“It doesn't really look like a lot of showers or possible flurries tonight. There might be a bit, but it's still just a chance. It's a definite precipitation amount," explained Berg.

He says that even with the possibility of light rain or flurries and below freezing temperatures overnight, a major impact on travel conditions is not expected.

Whatever we do receive is likely to disappear quickly as well, as temperatures are going to climb to at least 5° above normal on Saturday.

Temperature wise things are set to remain normal after Saturday’s high of 17°, but Berg notes that the sunshine will give way to several days of precipitation.

“It doesn't look like an excessive amount. For Sunday into Monday night it looks kind of like maybe 5 to 10 millimetres total,”

“It's a bit hard to tell at the moment, but that's kind of the ballpark. It might get a little bit high in some areas if there's some intense showers, but beyond that it's pretty reasonable.”

Berg mentions while conditions are looking fine for travel heading into the weekend, caution should be exercised by those hitting the roads Sunday through Tuesday despite the daytime warmth.

“It’s definitely warm enough that any of the rain that falls will pool off of the highways before any sort of overnight cooling happens. Given that temperatures look to be still close to zero, widespread icing is not necessarily expected,” Berg explains.

“It's possible if it drops another couple of degrees that some ice might form on roadways and people will have to be quite careful about that.”

Despite the Easter weekend’s mix of weather conditions, those travelling should expect conditions to be manageable with only minor precautions needed.
