Walter Joseph Silzer
March 5, 1930 - April 16, 2025
It is with great sadness the family of Walter Joseph Silzer announce his passing on April 16, 2025, at St. Mary’s Villa, Humboldt, Saskatchewan. He was 95 years of age. Walter was born on March 5, 1930, in Kisbey, Saskatchewan to Maria and Joseph Silzer. He grew up on the farm near St. James with his brother, Ewald and the nine Buettner boys that lived down the road.
In 1955 he married Katherine Berscheid, and they were blessed with four children. He farmed with his brother Ewald in the early years and later with his sons.
Leisure time, though limited, was spent fishing and golfing in the summer. Winter months provided a time for hunting and curling. Great times were spent at the curling rinks in the area and abroad. This provided an opportunity for visiting with neighbours and family as well as forging new friendships. After Kay’s sudden passing in 1995, he met Annette Sheets, and they spent many years together golfing and travelling.
He truly enjoyed his leisure activities, but his real passion was farming and working the land from the time the snow left in the spring until it returned in the fall. Getting the crop in the ground was the first priority. Frequent crop checks throughout the season and, finally, wrapping up the year with harvest provided him with a great sense of accomplishment. Later on, when he no longer participated in the farm activities one could always count on drive-by inspections from The Chief!
Although Walter only had one brother, his extended family was vast. He is profoundly missed by his children Mark (Denise) Silzer - Britany (Colin) Schlachter, Vanna (Ford) Leggott; Wayne’s daughter, Talisa (James) Fioroni; Jane (Cec) Stumborg; Colleen (Regan) Bernhard - Jeff (Erin) Bernhard, Deena (Devin) Pilsner, Tanis (Nathan) Gray; 14 great-grandchildren; partner, Annette Sheets and her family; nieces and nephews; as well as many friends.
Walter was pre-deceased by his wife, Kay, in 1995; sister-in-law, Leona Silzer in 1995; niece, Rose Silzer in 2019; son, Wayne, in 2019; and brother, Ewald, in 2020
The Funeral Service was offered at St. Anthony’s Roman Catholic Church, Lake Lenore, SK, on Thursday, May 8, 2025, at 11:00 am, celebrated by Fr. John Abban-Bonsu. Others taking part were Jeff Bernhard, cross bearer; Erin Bernhard & Dianne Ford, scripture readers; Deena Pilsner, Vanna Leggott & Tanis Gray, intentions; Linda Haeusler & Audrey Evans, memorial table attendants; Colleen Bernhard, poem of remembrance; Mark Silzer, eulogist; Mark Silzer, Jane Stumborg and Colleen Bernhard, urn bearers.
