Tracy Enns of the Boyne River Keepers is calling on the community to grab the final few tickets for an upcoming gala event, which promises an evening of connection, entertainment, and impact.

A scenic escape on the river

Enns, who lives along the Boyne River, says there’s something magical about the waterway during the warmer months.

“It’s so beautiful,” says Enns. “I have a little flat-bottom boat with an electric trolling motor, and just cruising along slowly—maybe do a little fishing, check out some birds, see the wildlife, the deer—it’s just great. I love that. It just feels like you're away from society for a bit.”

For Enns, the river is not just a backdrop—it’s a space for rejuvenation, reflection, and recreation. But she also emphasizes the importance of river safety in spring. “It’s moving very swiftly. It’s dangerous. Stay off of it,” she warns.

A gala with a greater purpose

The Boyne River Keepers are preparing to host a semi-formal ladies gala on May 10th, with only about a dozen tickets left.

“It’s a ladies evening—just get together with your girlfriends, have some appetizers, some wine, listen to some music,” says Enns. Entertainment will feature Carman musician 'The Rainyday Apparel' (Nathan Strange), and there will also be a short fashion show.

The event’s fundraising focus is on supporting Carman Wellness Connections—an organization promoting education and awareness around issues like domestic violence. “We decided again—it’s time to look outside of ourselves,” says Enns. “All of our proceeds are going to Carman Wellness Connections this year.”

The project is also a joint initiative with Communities in Bloom, further strengthening local collaborations.

New projects on the horizon

The Boyne River Keepers are also turning a new page in their environmental efforts with the launch of a program called Birds of the Boyne.

“Thanks to a recent grant from the Carman Area Foundation, we’re going to start this new project,” says Enns. “It’ll include interpretive signage along the Boyne River and pathway—maybe with a QR code that brings information to your phone about the birds you’re seeing.”

She adds, “It’s just kind of a new direction—tying it all together with the pathway and the river in Carman.”

Grand opening of new river launch

For those curious about experiencing the Boyne firsthand, a new launch site at Ryall Park is set to open later this spring.

“It’s a great place to start if you’re wanting to get onto the river,” Enns shares. “There’s going to be a little kayak launch going in at the bottom. Hopefully by May long weekend or the end of May, it’ll be ready.”
