One of the RCMP’s newest four-legged recruits now has a name, and it’s thanks to a young Albertan.
“Action” was one of 13 names chosen through the RCMP’s 2025 Name the Puppy contest, and the winning submission came from Alberta’s own Chance Jerome.
The contest invited kids aged four to 14 from across Canada to help name the first puppies born this year at the RCMP’s Police Dog Service Training Centre (PDSTC) in Innisfail.
More than 10,000 entries poured in between February 19 and March 19, all required to start with the letter “A” as part of the force’s alphabetical naming tradition. Each of the 13 winning names represents one Canadian province or territory.
This year’s picks include Ace (Yukon), Addy (New Brunswick), Argo (Newfoundland and Labrador), Ash (Nunavut), and Alberta’s Action, one of the bolder names in the pack.
The PDSTC in Innisfail is home to the RCMP’s national breeding program and trains all police dog teams that serve across the country. These pups go on to assist with tracking, searches, and detection of drugs and explosives.

Each contest winner receives a photo of the puppy they named, an RCMP plush toy, and a water bottle. And even if their entry wasn’t selected, some names could still be used later in the year.
Looking ahead, names for next year’s contest will need to start with the letter “B.”
