Main Street overflowed with people and emotion on April 18 as some 500 came together for the annual Walk of the Cross—an enduring Good Friday tradition in Cochrane that united the community in faith, reflection, and remembrance.
Families, church groups and individuals of all ages came together to retrace the path of Christ’s crucifixion, carrying wooden crosses, singing hymns, and pausing for prayer and scripture readings from the Gospel of Luke at 12 stations along the way.
A cross was raised at the community cenotaph, adorned with a purple cloth that will be replaced with a white one on Sunday to signify the resurrection of Christ.
“This is one of the largest crowds—possibly the largest,” said Pastor Bart, president of the local ministerial association. “The first year after COVID was also quite large.”
He said this year’s event was one of the smoothest in recent memory, thanks to an increased police presence keeping streets clear and a large team of volunteers assisting along the route.
