The final numbers are in, and they look great for the Dress Up Rumble staged by the CobraCats rugby teams of Bow Valley and Cochrane High.
On April 11, the boys’ and girls’ teams split into four squads to play 7s touch rugby—dressed to the nines. The teams rallied to surpass their fundraising goal of $900 to support two athletes with a few extra activities during the week.
The players enjoyed supporting their passion in a fun-loving way, although playing in gowns came with its challenges.
“It trips up your legs a lot, I’ve gotta say, but it’s not too different,” said Barrett Wennekamp. “Honestly, it breathes really well, you know.”
Would he do it again?
“Definitely. It raised some money for the club and supported some athletes, so that’s awesome.”
Alicia Graham said that after a few supplementary hot dog sales, they raised over $1,000, beating their $900 goal. It’s a good thing, too. Fees have been increasing, and that’s causing financial strain for some families.
Graham said the community’s businesses rallied behind the teams to help make the event a success.
Dairy Queen, Boston Pizza, Save-On-Foods, Mark’s No Frills, McDonald’s, and Canadian Pizza Unlimited chipped in with food and prizes. The Bobcat Backers also provided a $100 cash prize for the tournament MVP.
The crowd was small for the Dress Up Rumble, but hopes are high that next year’s team will build on the foundation laid.
