The QEII northbound reopened before 3 a.m. Tuesday, after a jackknifed semi shut it down for several hours between Township Road 294 and Carstairs. Didsbury RCMP warned of icy conditions and urged drivers to avoid unnecessary travel at the time of the incident.

"Didsbury RCMP is currently on scene of a motor vehicle collision involving a jackknifed truck on [the] QEII, near Township Road 294," police said in a statement issued just after midnight. "Highway 2 northbound will be closed in the area until further notice."

RCMP said road conditions were "currently dangerous, with ice forming in many areas," and urged extreme caution for anyone who needed to travel.

"The public is asked to avoid all unnecessary travel and those who must travel are asked to do so safely while taking road conditions into consideration," the statement said.

511 Alberta later confirmed the QEII had reopened before 3 a.m., but road conditions remained poor between Didsbury and Carstairs.

As of early Tuesday morning, the QEII north of the junction with Highway 2A to south of Bowden was listed as partly covered with snow, with icy sections, shoulder ice and snow, slush, packed snow and ice, and fog patches. Visibility was rated as fair.

Conditions southbound toward Calgary were somewhat improved but still slick. The QEII between the Calgary city limits and north of the Highway 2A junction was bare and wet but still had shoulder ice, icy wheel paths, black ice, blowing snow, and slippery sections. Visibility in that stretch was listed as good.

A snowfall warning for areas of Central Alberta has now ended.
