The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 15 in Cochrane is inviting veterans and the community to come together on May 8 to mark the 80th anniversary of Victory in Europe (VE) Day, the end of the Second World War in Europe in 1945.

The Legion will host a roast beef dinner followed by entertainment, offering a chance to honour those who served and reflect on the freedoms they helped secure.

“It’s a get-together to celebrate the end of the war and to appreciate what we have,” said District Commander Karen Bruens. “Our veterans fought hard for us. Some of us had parents who served in the Second World War, and many are still serving today to help keep the peace. I think it’s because of our veterans that we have that peace here.”

Veterans, along with their spouses and caregivers, can pick up complimentary tickets at the Cochrane Legion. Public tickets are also available for $30 each.

While VE Day hasn’t traditionally been marked in Cochrane, Bruens says the 80th anniversary is a significant moment.

“As far as I know, we haven’t celebrated VE Day in town before,” she said. “We usually mark Vimy Ridge Day on April 9, but I think this year is different. We have a lot of people in our community who weren’t born in Canada, and many of their families were impacted by the Second World War. This event honours all nations who were involved.”

Although there won’t be a formal program or presentation, attendees are encouraged to ask questions and share stories.

“It’ll be more informal, one-on-one conversations, and stories from some of the veterans,” said Bruens. “We’re really hoping for a full house. It’s also a chance for veterans we don’t often see to come out and reconnect.”
