The Humboldt Theatre Club has been active in the community for 9 years, and this spring’s production marks the 10th in their illustrious history. For its special anniversary production, the troupe is staging “Larceny and Old Lace,” a spoof of the revered “Arsenic and Old Lace” production familiar to many theatre goers.
Sarah Miller, production director, says this year’s choice was a welcome replacement to their original intention.
“We wanted to do something a little special this year,” Miller explains. “We thought about the possibility of doing ‘Arsenic and Old Lace,’ but unfortunately, the rights to put that one on were quite high. We definitely do not have the stage requirements to do a lot of big shows.”
Instead, the group decided to mount a production that spoofs the orginal, entitled “Larceny and Old Lace.” The story follows Millie and Gertie, a pair of sweet, matronly aunts whose penchant for the Vegas lifestyle has led them astray with much confusion and mirth. Caught in the fray is hapless nephew Harold who is trying to keep everyone out of jail, alive and out of trouble, while trying to maintain his own life.
“It’s an extremely funny play with some of the nuances of ‘Arsenic and Old Lace’ that people will recognize if they are fans of the original,” Miller says.
She notes that the numbers of people interested in participating in amateur local theatre are growing. This could mean larger productions, more plays during the year, and different types of entertainment offered.
This year’s show run is from May 1 to 4 with some matinee shows also available. Tickets are $25 each, available at Shoppers Drug Mart.
A high-quality theatrical show, intermission dessert and supporting local performing arts are all part of the package at the 10th production of the Humboldt Theatre Club held at the Humboldt Gathering Place.
