As the weather warms up, Cochrane RCMP officers are trading in their cruisers for mountain bikes as part of the Summer Patrol Program, a seasonal initiative that brings police officers into closer contact with the community.

The program officially rolled out this month, with four bikes freshly tuned up at Big Hill Cycle and ready to go.

Cst. Nathan Moore says the patrols provide a more approachable and visible police presence throughout town.

“You’ll probably see at least two officers out on bikes during a shift,” said Moore. “We use them to supplement the detachment, responding to calls, chatting with residents, or even writing the occasional ticket the old-fashioned way, with pen and paper.”

While patrols focus mainly on the downtown core, Moore says officers will often venture into neighbourhoods like Riversong and Sunset Ridge. A police truck is usually parked nearby for quick access if a serious call comes in.

“It’s kind of like a stealth approach,” he added. “People watch for police cars, but we can zip in and out of places quickly on bikes. Plus, it’s just a lot of fun, and great exercise too.”

Beyond law enforcement, the bike patrol also plays a community-building role. Officers often stop to speak with children, checking that they’re wearing helmets and encouraging safe riding habits.

Moore reminds residents to follow traffic laws and make use of designated bike lanes.

“With the weather we’re having, I can’t wait to be out on the bikes,” he said.
