Banff National Park officials are warning the public once again that operating drones without permission within park boundaries can lead to serious consequences.
The reminder comes after an individual was fined $1,100 for two infractions — one in Banff National Park and another in Waterton Lakes National Park — following an investigation into videos posted to social media.
Park officials say the person was charged under the National Parks Aircraft Access Regulations and issued two fines.
"This serves as a reminder to the public that park wardens can issue charges not only for operating a drone within national parks at the time of the incident, but also as a result of investigations into drone footage or content posted online," reads a recent statement.
The use of drones is prohibited in all national parks unless the operator has a permit for commercial use.
In 2023, Banff park officials received 78 drone-related complaints. The most severe penalty included a $1,000 fine and the forfeiture of all recorded media.
Officials are urging the public to report drone activity to Banff dispatch at 403-762-1470. They are asking for as many details as possible, including the drone pilot’s physical description and vehicle information.
"All reports of drone use are investigated, and charges laid result in drone seizure, a mandatory provincial court appearance, and fines determined by a judge," the release states.
Fines for illegal drone use in national parks can reach up to $25,000.
