The Saskatchewan Common Ground Alliance (SCGA) kicked off dig safe month at the beginning of April, launching into their province-wide campaign promoting safety and awareness around safe digging practices.

Part of this campaign is their 23 breakfast events held in communities across the province. They stopped in Weyburn yesterday at McKenna Hall, starting with a brief introduction and the presentation of one of three SaskEnergy Safe Digging Excellence Awards.

The award was presented to Jerry Mainil Limited, a local business that works throughout the southeast, delivering a variety of services including civil construction, pipeline integrity inspections, and maintenance and reclamation work.

CEO of Jerry Mainil Limited, Darcy McCormick, is quoted in a release sent by SaskEnergy saying “Jerry Mainil Limited does not do any excavating without having line locates completed prior to commencing any project.”

“The time it takes to request line locates is negligible and the peace of mind that this gives to the customer, the equipment operator and the contractor is invaluable.”

This is the first year the award is being given out, three Saskatchewan businesses were acknowledged in total. These businesses have completed a minimum of 25 line locates per year over the last three years and have had zero contacts with underground infrastructure.

Executive Vice President and Customer Service Operations for SaskEnergy Kevin Adair, is quoted saying the award was created to recognize and celebrate contractors who reduce the risk of underground infrastructure damage.

“Thanks to the conscientiousness of the digging community, SaskEnergy has had record low contacts with our buried infrastructure over the past three years. Jerry Mainil Limited is an example for other contractors in the province when it comes to their work around buried infrastructure and this award is about highlighting their practices.”

The other two businesses receiving the award are Yaremy Screw Piles in Melfort, who were acknowledges at the Tisdale event on April 3rd, and Parkland Contracting and Vac Services in Yorkton, who received their award on April 16th in Yorkton.
