Grade four students at Plum Coulee School are beginning their thespian careers early with a musical that will tell a familiar story from the Bible.
The musical’s title is Rescue in the Night.
“If you want to see great threes and fours, absolutely hitting their peak and doing stuff that you probably would not imagine threes and fours could do, you have to see this .... There's humour, great acting — you just have to come and see it.”
-David Banman, the grade 4 teacher behind Rescue in the Night.
“It's where Daniel wins the wisdom contest, and then the advisors get so mad because they don't get picked,” says Emma, a grade four student in the production. “Then they're thinking of a plot to get Daniel to not be the number one advisor.”
Lions, but not real ones
The well-known story from the Bible also includes heralds, kings, and, of course, lions — but the grade four students say that they aren’t real ones, in case any potential audience members are concerned.

Adalynn, another grade four student who plays Daniel, says that even though the musical features ferocious creatures, everything turns out well in the end.
“[Daniel] breaks a law and gets thrown into a lions' den, but God saves him,” she says.
A collaborative project
David Banman, the teacher behind the musical, collaborated with Plum Coulee School’s music director, Mr. Epp, on the staging.
He says it’s a “privilege” to work with the children involved.
“We haven’t done [a musical] for many, many years, and we thought we had the right personnel,” he says. “If you want to see great threes and fours, absolutely hitting their peak and doing stuff that you probably would not imagine threes and fours could do, you have to see this .... There's humour, great acting — you just have to come and see it.”
Rescue in the Night takes to the stage on April 30th in Plum Coulee School's gym. Admission is free, and the show begins at 6:30 p.m.
