The Completely Branded/RentPro Weyburn Razorbacks opened their second season in the PGLL Sunday afternoon in Regina against the Chaos. The game would see the two teams go back and forth in a high-scoring affair before a last-second goal by Ryder Hignett in regulation handed the Razorbacks a 15-14 victory to start the 2025 campaign.
Hignett would open the scoring as well, with a goal assisted by Sam Borschowa and Jack Missal 4:09 into the game. Colter Goodwill Jr. would reply for the Chaos at 7:27, before the Razorbacks took the lead again moments later.
Missal would score his first of the game at 8:47 of the first period, then he added a goal assisted by Wyatt Mickler and Borschowa with 10:30 remaining to put Weyburn up 3-1. Regina replied shortly after as Austen Enright made it 3-2 with 8:03 to go in the first period. Kenton Appel then tied the game with 2:12 to go in the opening frame, and Jeremy Lejeune scored with 73 seconds left in the period to give the Chaos a 4-3 lead.
In the second period, Weyburn would come out with four goals in just under three minutes to regain the lead. Hignett scored his second of the game 4:42 into the period, assisted by Borschowa. Missal then scored 59 seconds later with Jaden Chrest getting the assist. Hignett would score his third of the game at the 6:15 mark with Borschowa getting the assist before Nash Hignett added another goal 54 seconds later, with Ryder Hignett and Jessica Benning assisting, putting Weyburn up 7-4.
Regina responded with five goals of their own over eight minutes in the second half of the period. Appel scored at the 8:14 mark, with Avery Sewell then scoring with nine minutes left to play in the period. Sewell scored again to even the game up with 7:24 to go, and Eric Okerstrom gave the Chaos the lead with just over five minutes remaining in the period. Caleb Singer-Scherle then scored a shorthanded goal with 3:34 to play in the period, making it 9-7 for Regina.
Borschowa answered with a goal with 2:27 remaining in the second. The power play marker was assisted by Ryder Hignett and Jack Missal, bringing Weyburn within a goal, but Enright scored 10 seconds later to restore Regina’s two-goal edge.
In the third period, the lead would be opened to three goals when Enright scored his third of the day just 53 seconds in. Then, Weyburn roared back to regain the lead.
The flurry of offence started with a goal from Missal 1:30 into the period, assisted by Ryder Hignett. Hignett then added his fourth of the game, with the assists credited to Hunter Willoughby and Borschowa, 2:18 into the third. Borschowa scored unassisted 35 seconds after that, and Hignett added an unassisted shorthanded goal at 6:34 of the frame to make it 12-11 Weyburn.
Regina evened things up when Enright scored at 7:46 of the third, before Borschowa would make it 13-12 for the visitors with a power play goal at 8:20. Hignett and Benning had the assists on the goal.
The Chaos would again tie things up when Singer-Scherle scored his second of the game, but Vann Dennis restored the lead for Weyburn with 5:20 to play. Brody Morrice and Chrest assisted on the tally.
Bennett Singer-Scherle would find the net to make it 14-14 with 2:31 remaining in the third period, but the Razorbacks weren’t finished.
With 18 seconds left in regulation, Hignett notched his sixth goal of the game to hand Weyburn the win. Borschowa and Mickler assisted on the goal.
Weyburn netminder Matthew Charlton was busy throughout the game. He would face 65 shots on goal, turning aside 51 of them to earn the win.
The Razorbacks will now prepare for their home opener. They host the Prince Albert Predators at Tom Zandee Sports Arena Saturday evening. The game starts at 7 p.m.
