St. Andrew’s United Church is marking a major milestone today as it celebrates the 10th anniversary of its beloved Free Community Lunch program. The event, which runs from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m., will feature a special lunch, a short program, and the warm sense of community that has kept the tradition going strong for a decade.
The Free Community Lunch began in 2015, the vision of Reverend Ray Goodship, who wanted the church to play an active role in building community along Main Street. Since then, the lunch has become a weekly fixture, welcoming families, seniors, and anyone who feels like dropping in for a hearty meal and good conversation.
“The Community Lunch has just continued to grow. Even through COVID, we kept it going with deliveries and takeout,” said Mary McGee, one of the six Community Lunch Leaders who help organize the weekly event. “We’ve averaged sending home between 70 and 75 bowls of soup every week this year. It’s wonderful — every week there are returning faces and new ones.”
Today's anniversary menu will feature three delicious soups: ham and potato, vegan lentil, and Toscana, alongside buns, dessert, coffee, and juice. As always, the meals will cater to dietary needs with vegan and gluten-free options available.

Community Lunch Program Looks For Support
Second monthly free community supper on Monday night
McGee also emphasized that the program’s success is thanks to the support of local businesses, service clubs, and individual donors. “It’s financially sustainable and completely independent. Everything is made possible by community sponsorships, and all of us on the team are food safety certified to meet Alberta Health standards,” she said.
No registration is required — anyone is welcome to simply stop by, grab a bowl of soup, and enjoy a meal among friends. A short program will begin around 12:20 p.m. to recognize the occasion.
“It's all kinds of people that attend. It's just amazing to see how it brings people together,” McGee added.
