Estevan and Weyburn are going head-to-head once again — and things are about to get messy. Or, hopefully, cleaner.
Councillor Kirsten Walliser announced at Monday night’s council meeting that the two cities will be competing in the Golden Garbage Can competition. Walliser will represent Estevan, while Councillor Kellie Sidloski will represent Weyburn.
“This light-hearted rivalry is about community pride, cleanliness and showing the best of what our cities have to offer,” Walliser said.
“The Golden Garbage Can competition promotes residential clean-up, encouraging everyone to take part in sprucing up their homes, yards and neighbourhoods.”
The friendly rivalry is returning for the first time since 2010.
On June 9, a panel of five judges will tour Estevan and Weyburn to assess each community’s efforts.
“The city that shines the brightest will be awarded the coveted Golden Garbage Can award — and, of course, the bragging rights until next year,” she said.
Walliser said it’s a great opportunity for the city to come together, have fun and show pride in the community.
“Whether it’s pulling weeds, picking litter or planting flowers, every little effort counts,” she said. “Together we can make a big difference — and maybe even bring home the coveted can. Let the friendly competition begin.”
Estevan residents will have a chance to reduce their clutter during the city’s free landfill weekend, running May 24 and 25, when they can drop off eligible items at the landfill at no charge.
