A fire broke out at the Quality Inn and Suites in Winkler on Tuesday afternoon. Winkler Fire Department and other emergency services responded to the scene.
As the situation unfolds, sections of Main Street and Highway 14 have been closed as thick smoke rises from the structure. At this time, the public is asked to stay away from the scene as emergency crews work to contain the situation.
According to a news release issued by Schinkel Properties, which owns and operates the hotel, the fire was first reported on the roof. All hotel and restaurant guests, staff and pets inside the building at the time of the fire were evacuated safely. The release stated no injuries were reported.
As of Tuesday evening, emergency response crews remain on site working to contain and extinguish the fire.
Operations at the hotel will remain suspended until authorities have completed their investigation and the building is deemed safe for reentry.
